Indonesian Super part 1

hmm is it because of the 'gotong royong' spirit or because this country just have no guts for different kind of music? well, anyway these are Aksara Records' missiles, (self) profiles were taken from myspace..

LAIN
4 ordinary people with musical talents, driven by the same vision in music, Aghi Narottama, Harris Khaseli, Bemby Gusti & Iman Fattah decide to get together in a band and bring their musical vision up front. without much of a problem, they recorded the songs in Seattle, USA in 2000 and finally released by mid 2001. LAIN...a project of these 4 young people are noting more but a band, an institution which they can express themselves in whatever artform they want. in fact, each of these individuals have their own project. Aghi is the brain behind an electronic/experimental band "APEONTHEROOF", which blend the elements of strings and danceable electronic beats to make an inspiring music with a female vocalist Utari Syaukat. Bemby also play with "SORE", an imaginative but hig...

this is Sing Sing

Lisa O`Neill and Emma Anderson, collectively know as Sing-Sing, are preparing to unleash their second full length album `Sing-Sing and I` on July 11th. Drawing on such diverse influences as folk-rock, heavy metal hammer-ons, a bit of Motown drumming and just out-and-out indie-pop, `Sing-Sing and I` carries the distinctive Sing-Sing sound. However, probably due to the extensive American touring, the songs are edgier favouring guitars over the electronic samples that dominated debut album `The Joy of Sing-Sing` whilst retaining Sing-Sing`s trademark lyricism - charming and witty personal observations.

The `difficult second album` has legendarily been a challenge to bands. In Sing-Sing`s case, it was problematic for reasons other than the usual songwriting dearth. For Sing-Sing, it was just getting into a position where they could make an album. Lisa and Emma had survived many punches since their inception in 1998 lesser bands might have given up the ghost much further back down the ...

sigur ros have released four albums so far, plus one remix album (von brigði - recycle bin). the first album, recently given a worldwide release for the first time, is called von (hope). frequently unrecognisable from the bulk of their subsequent work, von is an experimental and ambient work, whic...

Biography

Four identical figures stand on stage, blasting out edgy pop anthems with Teutonic flair and twisted outlook. This is Ladytron – a quartet composed of Helen Marnie, Daniel Hunt, Reuben Wu, and Mira Aroyo. They've taken the UK by storm, toured extensively throughout Europe, and are now prepared to bring their sound stateside with Light & Magic, their newest release on Emperor Norton Records. Forming by chance through meetings in bars and parks, they set out in an unusual way, ignoring London to play their debut show in a Paris bowling alley, and releasing their debut single, "He Took Her to a Movie," in mid-1999. Strange European dates followed in temporary spaces in east Berlin and to frenzied electrokids in Barcelona, slowly building a reputation as one of the most interesting new acts around, for lovers of the sounds and the songs alike. This skewed approach to crafting pop music has rewarded the group with overwhelming critical acclaim. Ladytron's UK debut single, "He Took Her To A ...

Music and Politics

There is a long history of the connection between music and politics, particularly political expression in music. This expression has most often used anti-establishment or protest themes, although pro-establishment ideas are also used, for example in national anthems and patriotic music.

Politics in different musical genres
Folk music has a tradition of political content, with songs sung to commemorate popular uprisings and strikes, and to protest against injustice and social inequity.

Classical music has often been used to glorify political leaders, largely because the patronage of the rich or powerful was the main source of income for composers in previous centuries; see for example Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser, French overture. In recent times this has become less prevalent; the Master of the Queen's Music in the U.K., for example, is no longer required to compose hagiographies to Elizabeth II. Even in the past classical composers registered dissent: Beethoven removed a dedication...

“Home alone and happy / Nothing brings me down“

So opens Emiliana Torrini’s second album, a soft-yet-searing collection of twelve intimate and atmospheric songs that will whisper their way into your bloodstream. Back in 1999, when the singer released the critically acclaimed Love In The Time Of Science, Emiliana came out with a gorgeous, electronic trippoppin’ vision of endless summer and moonlit nights out. Following her departure from One Little Indian, there’s a new introspection, closer to Nick Drake or Jolie Holland than Portishead or Goldfrapp.

“This whole record is about these four years I was away,“ explains Emiliana “ Very life-changing times. A lot of things happened. I just couldn“t at this stage go back to writing a record like I did before.“ Indie HQ Rough Trade clearly approved of her new direction: they signed Emiliana immediately after hearing the first demos from Fisherman“s Woman.

The 27-year-old singer and writer has nonetheless been busy since Love In The Time Of Science. She moved to Brighton, joined the...

From the Desk of Mr Lady

Something truly exciting transpired around the turn of the century (yes, about a year ago): a batch of fresh and thrilling records were coming out in disparate parts of the world, connected by a red thread. Between Chicks on Speed, Stereo Total and Le Tigre, it seemed like girls were poised to take over the world with their noisy toys. Lifting rhythm sections from the uncoolest organs and showcasing kind of weird female vocals, the releases by these three groups seemed to constitute a prophetic moment for fun and funny dance music like no other dance music before. While Stereo Total comes off as completely apolitical, and the Chix speak to followers of a particular art world, Le Tigre are explicitly political and interested in the production of political art and discourses. If you aren't familiar with their self-titled release, there is something terribly wrong. Drop everything and go get it right

Good Humor (1998)

Saint Etienne have always excelled at making incredibly versatile music. They create songs that are ideal background music for shopping, Sunday drives, and of course, dancing. This is due to their consistent output of lush melodies and light club beats. Their fourth LP, Good Humor, shows that Saint Etienne have created yet another collection of miniature soundtracks for more of those weekly habits.
